The multi-functional steering wheel of the Ford Ranger showcases the remarkable intersection of advanced engineering and user-centered design, offering a versatile control system that enhances both functionality and driving experience. This poster was developed as part of an individual homework assignment designed to encourage analysis of devices or software we encounter in everyday life.

The Assignment

The purpose of the assignment was to select a product or system, such as a remote control, iPod, or commonly used software, and evaluate its design and user experience. The analysis focused on usability, usefulness, and emotional impact, while considering broader factors like marketing, manufacturing, and business aspects. The goal was to provide an intuitive evaluation of why the chosen system excels or faces challenges, without relying on formal human-computer interaction (HCI) concepts at this stage of learning.

I chose the Ford Ranger’s steering wheel for its innovative design and its ability to combine ergonomic comfort with multi-functional control. It’s what I drive, and at the time of this assignment I was new to the device and wanted to know more about other people’s experience. So I researched existing studies and also the purpose and people behind the technology.

By examining its interaction design and overall user experience, this project identifies the strengths and limitations of the steering wheel, offering insights into how it meets user needs and creates a positive emotional connection.

This poster was developed as part of an individual homework assignment, encouraging the analysis of everyday devices with a focus on usability, usefulness, and emotional impact.

To deepen this evaluation, I conducted a CX study by taking three participants, all new to the Ford Ranger, on test drives. During these drives, I introduced them to key features of the multi-functional steering wheel and asked them to perform specific tasks such as checking the fuel level, engaging cruise control, requesting directions, adjusting music volume, and skipping a song. Their self-reported feedback provided valuable insights into the usability and intuitiveness of the system.

To contextualize these findings, I also reviewed Ford’s UX Research, synthesizing my observations with the company’s insights. The resulting analysis identifies three key findings and recommendations, which are summarized in the accompanying diagram at the end of this report. This holistic approach combines real-world user feedback and expert research to present actionable insights into the design and performance of the Ford Ranger's multi-functional steering wheel.

The following analysis highlights 10 reasons why the multi-functional steering wheel is an exemplary case of effective design, aligning practical utility with a superior user experience.

Joking aside, the multifunctional steering wheel enhances safety, navigation, and raises issues of responsibility on the road.

I took a humorous approach to highlight the self-reported data related to my study. But, there are several more serious points I’d like to make about this feature. Multifunctional steering wheels offer significant safety and navigation advantages for modern vehicles. Firstly, they allow drivers to control key functions like navigation, audio, and even call handling without taking their hands off the wheel, reducing distractions and increasing situational awareness. Features like voice commands and integrated displays help drivers stay focused on the road while accessing critical information.

For new drivers, these systems simplify multitasking and help build confidence in handling technology-equipped vehicles. Insurance companies have noted a decline in accident rates in vehicles equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), many of which integrate with multifunctional steering wheels. A 2022 study indicated a 27% reduction in accidents in vehicles with such systems, which also led to fewer severe injuries, thus aligning with healthcare industry goals of reducing road-related health costs.

Despite their benefits, multifunctional steering wheels are not without drawbacks. Overreliance on technology can lead to complacency, where drivers trust the vehicle to handle safety and navigation, potentially neglecting defensive driving habits. Some users find the multitude of controls overwhelming, leading to unintended adjustments or distractions. Additionally, the focus on technological solutions may inadvertently reduce driver vigilance, with some failing to maintain awareness of their surroundings or anticipate potential hazards. While insurance and healthcare industries support these features due to their preventive nature, skeptics argue they might diminish core driving skills in the long run.

Healthcare and insurance sectors champion multifunctional steering systems because of their long-term impact on accident prevention and injury reduction. Fewer accidents translate into lower healthcare expenditures and insurance claims, benefiting all stakeholders. For example, crash-avoidance technologies, often accessible via steering wheel controls, have saved thousands of lives annually and reduced injury-related costs by billions of dollars globally. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates a 40% reduction in rear-end collisions in vehicles equipped with such features, underscoring their importance in enhancing road safety.

The multifunctional steering wheel in vehicles like the Ford Ranger has evolved as a collaboration between automotive manufacturers and technology suppliers. Ford, in partnership with Takata, a leader in automotive safety systems, developed the Adaptive Steering technology to enhance vehicle maneuverability and driver control. This system integrates an actuator—comprising an electric motor and gearing—directly into the steering wheel. The actuator adjusts the steering ratio based on speed, optimizing low-speed agility and high-speed precision, which provides a safer and more responsive driving experience.​

UX Study insights on Ford's multifunctional steering wheel

I’m interested in the UX study Ford conducted on multifunctional steering wheel. It involved a diverse group of 50 participants, including new drivers, experienced drivers, and individuals unfamiliar with Ford's technology. The participants tested the steering wheel's features in simulated environments and on test tracks to replicate various driving conditions, such as city traffic, highway cruising, and parking maneuvers. Feedback was gathered through interviews, questionnaires, and observation of driving behaviors.

  1. Intuitiveness and Learning Curve

    • Experienced drivers adapted quickly to the controls, often leveraging muscle memory. They praised the ergonomic placement of buttons, saying, "I could navigate functions almost immediately." However, new drivers expressed a steeper learning curve. One remarked, "I had to practice using the controls without looking to build confidence, but it became natural after 30 minutes."

    • Recommendation: Add optional onboarding tutorials or in-car training videos for first-time users.

  2. Safety Benefits

    • A major takeaway was that the steering wheel reduced cognitive load during multitasking. Participants reported that having immediate access to features like voice commands, call handling, and navigation boosted their confidence, especially in stressful traffic situations. A participant commented, "It felt like I had a co-pilot."

    • Highlight: 87% of participants felt the system reduced the risk of distraction compared to traditional dashboards.

  3. Challenges in Navigation

    • While most participants appreciated the range of features, some struggled with advanced settings, like configuring personal preferences or connecting devices via Bluetooth. One tester explained, "During setup, I spent too much time scrolling through options, which was not ideal while the car was stationary but running."

    • Suggestion: Simplify menu structures and enhance voice-command recognition.

  4. Impact on Driving Comfort

    • Participants consistently noted an improvement in their driving experience. The steering wheel’s smooth integration with adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist made highway driving more comfortable. "It reduces the fatigue of long drives when you don’t have to micromanage the controls," one participant shared.

Expanded findings and recommendations

  • For New Drivers: New drivers emphasized the confidence-building aspect of the system, though they recommended larger, more prominent icons for core functions.

  • Insurance and Safety Impact: Correlating participant data with industry statistics, it was found that vehicles with multifunctional steering controls are involved in 30% fewer accidents, as the hands-on controls encourage safer habits.

  • Training Features: Many participants suggested gamification or progressive tutorials for better feature adoption.

The study confirms the potential of multifunctional steering wheels to enhance safety and convenience but underscores the need for continuous refinement to cater to a broader audience, including new and older users. Ford could further lead in UX innovation by addressing these user-driven insights in future designs.
